Rakesh Tikait writes to PM, seeks ban on genetically modified seeds in India

Farmer leader Rakesh Tikait wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging a complete ban on genetically modified (GM) seeds in India. The letter references historical instances where the introduction of genetically modified crops, such as Bacillus thuringiensis (BT) cotton, raised concerns about their potential adverse effects on human health and the environment.
Tikait also addressed the growing challenges faced by farmers, including escalating input costs and unpredictable climatic conditions, impacting crop yields and reducing farmer incomes. In the letter, Tikait pointed out that despite adversities, farmers are not receiving fair compensation for their produce, further worsening their economic plight.
Genetically modified (GM) crops are plants whose DNA has been modified through genetic engineering to develop specific desirable traits. This process often involves incorporating genes from other organisms, such as bacteria or plants, into the crop’s genetic structure.
Tikait recalled the steps taken by the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) to prevent field trials of certain crops in the past, emphasising the need for vigilance against similar threats today.

He emphasised that despite the active opposition to GM crops, unauthorised entry of such crops into the country continues. According to Tikait, this occurs due to weak enforcement of existing regulations and standards during the import process, posing a serious threat to national biosecurity.

To address these issues, Tikait suggested convening a meeting involving key stakeholders, including the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) and civil society representatives, to strengthen regulatory frameworks and enhance surveillance of imports, especially from GM-producing countries like the USA, Brazil, Argentina, and Australia.

He warned of the detrimental impacts of GM crops on human health, such as potential cancer risks and skin ailments, and their harmful effects on livestock and pollinators.
Tikait called for stringent measures to ban GM seeds and prevent unauthorised field trials, threatening nationwide protests by the BKU if the government fails to act.
