Description
This offering is for an estate-fresh Weimar or early Third Reich era dress bayonet (KS 98). The bayonet is in its original condition, having surfaced out of an estate attic only recently. It is in overall very good, original condition, just showing some age spotting and light, smooth patina / oxidation primarily on the reverse and rear-most facing edge of the pommel. The entire blade, hilt, tang and pommel are plated STEEL (as opposed to the later, T.R. period dress bayonets, which were primarily nickel plated steel blades affixed via rivets to a white metal tang and pommel), hence this is a rather robust dress bayonet. The heavily checkered grip plates appear to be an early form of celluloid or bakelite, are affixed to the tang via two high-profiled domed rivets. The pommel has a functional mortise slot and release catch w/ very good tension. There is NO FELT PLUG extant in the mortise slot, and I can't say w/ any certainty that it ever had one. The blade measures approximately 10 inches long, and the entire bayonet (sans sheath), is 15 inches from blade tip to top of pommel. The original, black-painted steel sheath is included and is in likewise very good original, vintage condition. The upper portion which would've originally been protected beneath the leather belt frog retains the better part of its original finish, whereas the remaining 3/4 of its length is a mixture of light remaining black paint and lightly oxidized steel. There is NO BELT FROG w/ this bayonet. It is being offered exactly as you see it presented here. The blade exhibits no signs of sharpening or wear, and I detect just the slightest bend at the very tip, which could've been there forever, and is only mentioned only in the interest of full disclosure. This could be easily rectified, or left alone, as it's very insignificant, and barely worth mentioning. From my experience at least, dress bayonets from this early period between the World Wars don't surface very often, and this is a very nice example, dare I say, probably missing from most collections, so don't miss this opportunity.Buyer is responsible for actual postage costs, to be tabulated at close of sale based on buyers location and method shipped* (**Typically via USPS Priority Mail post which may include insurance and / or signature confirmation fees).
